Darwin Eco-system of the Niel barracks, more commonly known as "Darwin", is the name given to the former Niel military barracks rehabilitated in La Bastide in Bordeaux. It is a multicultural space, hosting companies, associations, and offering notably catering or sports services.
A little history:
The rehabilitation of the Niel barracks, and the installation of Darwin within it, are part of a more general reconversion policy for the right bank of Bordeaux that began in 19961.
At that time, the city of Bordeaux was reflecting on the future of the Bastide Niel site, and was considering the possibility of setting up a ZAC. However, the inhabitants were attached to the heritage represented by the barracks. In 2007, the Urban Community of Bordeaux, or CUB, acquired the Bastide Niel site. However, the buildings on the site were still threatened with destruction, and the CUB obtained a demolition permit. Alain Juppé, the city's mayor at the time, therefore set up two workshops bringing together local residents, following which the rehabilitation of the Bastide Niel district was decided upon, immediately taking into account the Darwin project. At the time, Darwin represented only one hectare of the 34 hectares of the general project of the Bastide Niel ZAC eco-district, but it was quickly considered one of the central elements of the project. Furthermore, during Bordeaux's candidacy for the title of European Capital of Culture, Darwin was presented as one of the representatives of the eco-creative pole, along with the Fabrique POLA. Negotiations between the CUB and Philippe Barre for the purchase of the Niel barracks buildings lasted until December 2008, when the two reached an agreement. Work on Darwin began in 2011. 10,000 m² of hangars where the skate-park and the urban farm are installed. Finally, 5,000 m² are squatted, and he installs a BMX-park, a bike-polo field and roller-derby.
