The Apartment:
The apartment is in a small complex of apartments in the Spa town of Brides Les Bains in the French Alps. It is situated just below Meribel and The 3 Valleys ski area, the largest ski area in Europe. The apartment is about 200m from the centre of Brides Les Bains and about 300m from the Gondola that links direct to the ski lifts in Meribel. There is a free shuttle bus that runs about every 15 minutes to the Gondola for a few hours every morning & afternoon.
The apartment is a four-person studio apartment typical of many ski studios found throughout the Alps. The complex has only just recently been completely rebuilt / refurbished so feels like new.
There is a sofa bed in the lounge area that converts into a very large comfortable double bed or into 2 full size singles. All bedding, pillows and towels can be provided free of charge. A television & large travel cot can also be provided free of charge if required.
The kitchen area is fully fitted and includes a fridge, dishwasher, combi-microwave oven, hob, coffee machine, plenty of storage & an extractor fan. All cutlery & crockery is provided.
The bathroom has a bath with power shower over endless hot water. The basin is in a vanity unit with plenty of storage and a lit mirror. A heated towel rail helps things dry.
There are bunk beds in the hall area that will accommodate adults if required & a wardrobe with shelves & hanging space. There are no additional heating or service charges.
The apartment block has all the facilities you could need. There are underground parking spaces that access the stairs and lift access to all floors. The foyer and reception area is nice and comfortable and has wi-fi access and the reception desk is manned morning and evening to answer any questions you may have. There is also a self-service laundry, a locker room to store skis & boots and a games room.
The apartment complex, which comprises two similar blocks, has a heated indoor swimming pool & Jacuzzi, a small gym and a sauna. There is also a ski shop within the complex that hires and sells skis, boots, etc.
The apartment is good quality, excellent value accommodation.
Brides Les Bains:
Brides-les-Bains, is a lovely French Savoyard Spa town created in 1848 and renowned for its slimming cures and spa. It was the site of the Olympic Village for the 1992 Olympics. The Olympe gondola was built to link it with Les Allues and Méribel, in the heart of the Trois Vallées. As a result, the town is now widely recognised as offering an exceptional value for money gateway to the largest ski area in the world.
Brides-les-Bains has a number of bars and restaurants as well as two nightclubs and the only casino of the Three Valleys, all with prices well below those of Meribel and Courchevel. It is possible to relax in the brand new large spa centre which offers traditional oriental baths, aromatics steam rooms and saunas. There’s also all the usual small town facilities such as a bank, small supermarket, pharmacy, shops, etc.
Meribel & The 3 Valleys:
The 3 Valleys consists of, among others, the following towns and resorts, Brides Les Bains, Courchevel 1300, Courchevel 1550, Courchevel 1650, Courchevel 1850, La Tania, Les Ménuires, Méribel Village, Méribel Centre, Méribel Mottaret, Saint Martin de Belleville & Val Thorens.
This is the largest ski area in the world and boasts 600 km of pistes on 275 slopes, serviced by 198 lifts between 600m and 3200m. There are also over 1300 snow canons - an awesome amount of skiing. As Meribel is the central valley of the 3 Valleys, from here you have easy access to pretty much anywhere.
In Meribel itself there is also the Olympic Center which has an ice rink, Olympic size pool with kids pool and slides and crèche facilities.
Skiing & Snowboarding Info:
Meribel is a favourite amongst the British snowboarders with good, varied terrain and tree runs. Steep free riding can be found untracked on Mont du Vallon. There are lots of red runs for intermediate boarders and plenty of blues and greens for those starting out.
For experts, you are well catered for! The “Face” run was built for the womens downhill in 1992 Olympics. There are steep runs running from Tougnete back to Méribel. For intermediates, Meribel and the 3 Valleys is considered a ‘paradise’. For beginners Meribel has a few excellent slopes and beginners areas including two new enclosed areas (‘Zen Zones’) at Plattieres, above Mottaret. There is also a large choice of ‘off piste’ runs suitable for the more accomplished.
In Meribel there are a number of ski & snowboard schools that cater for all ages and abilities from toddler to adult & novice to expert. Personally I have used the Magic in Motion ski School for adult and child lessons and the ESF crèche. Both were excellent.
There are two terrain parks in this area. The main Moonpark includes a triple kicker line for all levels with smooth take-offs, and the rails are advanced.
Travel, Booking, Dates, etc:
The apartment is easily accessible from Chambery, Grenoble & Geneva Airports. It is also only about a 10 minute taxi from the Ski Train stop at Moutiers. Being in the foothills of the French Alps it is also a relatively easy drive.
